We all want the perfect lawn. Fertilizer will help keep it green and vibrant, but if the lawn is not being properly mowed it can cause the grass to weaken and brown in color. Here are some tips to keep in mind while mowing your lawn:
- DON’T mow too short: Keep your mower deck raised to 3”-3.5” in height. The lawn may brown out if the grass is mowed too short, taller grass will shade the soil and keep the moisture in.
- Alternate your cutting patterns: This will prevent making a wear pattern in the lawn and it is healthier for the grass blades.
- You do not always need to bag the clippings: Clippings that are 1” or less can be kept on the lawn. Nature will work its magic and break down all the nutrients in the cut blades and give the growing grass some extra plant food! NOTE: If you haven’t mowed for a while don’t leave excess clippings on the ground. If the grass can’t get the sunlight it needs to grow, it will die.
- Keep your mower blades sharp: Dull blades on your mower cause the grass to fray and weaken. If you can see small while ‘hairs’ on the tip of the grass blade you know its time for you to sharpen the blades.
- Make sure your tire pressure is correct: Low tires won’t only hurt your mower but it can create ruts in the lawn when you turn the wheel.
